Production Diary

This is my production diary from throughout this unit.

Production diary

Date: 11/11/13
Location: Gateshead Collage

This week I generated different ideas through research then chose what I thought was the best idea and pitched it to the class in a power point.

I enjoyed this lesson as I got to be creative and think of lots of different ideas to make my video.

Next lesson I will start my pre production work.

Date: 18/11/13
Location: Gateshead College

This week I started all my pre production sheets such as; risk assessments, talent release forms, budget, Equipment list and cast and crew lists.

I found this lesson a bit boring as it was all just writing but it all has to be done before making my video!

Next week I will finish pre production such as scripts and all planning.

Date: 25/11/13
Location: Gateshead

Today I finished off all my pre production and wrote the scripts for my student interviewees

Next week I will draw the step by step story boards for my video and if I have enough time start playing around with the camera to get used to it before making my video

Date: 02/12/13
Location: Gateshead College

Finished all pre production including scripts and storyboards and also practised taking different basic shots around the college, such as tilt, zoom in and out.

I really liked today’s session as I got to practise with the camera and also learned different shot styles and how to work a camera

Next week I will start filming my promotional video for Gateshead College.

Date: 09/12/13
Location: Gateshead College

Got most of my filming done this week and started my interviews with the students.

This has been my favourite session so far as it was all hands on and I got to use the camera for different shots.

Next week I will film my last interview then capture and start editing my video

Date: 06/01/14
Location: Gateshead College

Finished all filming, captured my footage from the camera and started editing my video together using final cut.

Next lesson I will finish editing my movie then show it to the rest of the class for feedback and start evaluation.

Date: 13/01/14
Location: Gateshead

Finished editing all my footage together, I also made a quick questionnaire for my peers to fill in and return to me as feedback after watching my video.

In the next few days I will make sure everything is complete and write up my evaluation then post everything on my blog

Date: 23/01/14

Evaluation

Evaluation

For this assignment I had to produce and create a 30 second video to promote Gateshead College for to help future students with choosing the right college to attend. I had to start by generating different ideas of how I could promote the college followed by different pre production task before making my video.

Pre production

Before starting my Pre production work I had to think of an idea to pitch to my other classmates. I came up with the idea of showing basic shots from around the college of the different departments and conduct 2 – 3 interviews with different students to find out what they think of the college. I came up with this idea because I have never used a camera or made a video before so I thought it would be pretty basic but at the same time meet the brief to make a promotional video.

The target audience for my video was mainly 16-18 year olds as this is the main age range in the college but not disclosing mature students either.  I wanted to focus mainly on the media and arts department as that is where I’m most familiar with in the college. I wanted to show a recording studio with equipment in, the art department and examples of students work and the library facilities along with some shots of the ‘inspirational quotes’ around the college. I wanted to include some students talking about their experience at Gateshead College and what they enjoyed about it – at this point I was unsure whether I would include them visually in my video or just have them as a voice over behind the shots. I pitched this as my initial idea to the class and with the feedback I received I decided to go ahead and turn it into my final video.

Before starting to film I had to undertake a number of pre production sheets such as talent release forms for anyone who would feature in my video – this is so you have written permission that you can use them in a video that may be shown to people. I had to do a risk assessment sheet for the college in case of any accidents and so that myself and anyone else around was aware of any possible dangers and how they are avoidable.  I then created a cast and crew list so I knew where everyone was who I needed to be involved and made sure I had contact number to get a hold of them when needed. I also made an equipment list so I was aware that when it came to filming I knew exactly what I wanted and where I could find it and that it was available at the times needed.

After I completed all my pre production sheets I drew up some story boards to help me with the exact order, a guide and where I wanted all my shots to take place. I roughly drew each frame with what I wanted to happen, it took place over 8 small drawings I also wrote a short discription of what the shot would entail and the duration of it. Then I needed to make myself more familiar with a camera as I have had very little practise in the past. To do this I took different shots around the college such as long and short shot and tilt shots. This gave me a feel of the camera and used to the different buttons and how I need to check the focus before every shot as well as learning different shot types. I found this useful when it came to shooting my video because I was more prepared and knew exactly what the set up would have to be before each clip.
I then began the filming process I started off by filming different areas of the art department, the hall leading to it where all the paintings or on the walls then I filmed parts of the library and the sign outside which has a quote on I used the zoom in and out for this shot. I also filmed down stairs in the recording studio and showed a student using the equipment such as the drums and keyboard. I had a quick clip of the inside of the college for just a feel of what it looked like. I then interviewed four students all studying different things I asked them to respond to my questions as if I had not asked them, my questions were:

What’s your name and what do you study?

Why did you choose Gateshead College?

Do you enjoy your course and why?

Are the facilities good for you chosen subject?

What do you hope to go and do after college?

For each student I had them fill out a talent release form. Although I filmed four students in my final video I decided to use only two as the sound quality was poor and the voices I chose fit into my video better.
After filming and making sure I had enough shots to edit me then had to video capture the footage before editing. I found this a bit of a hassle as I had to find each clip and go through all the video before finding mine - this I something that could have been much easier if id kept it all on the same tape all together. I then edited my shots together to make my final video where I decided to keep my interviews in visually as well as the voices. I chose the audio track Happy by Pharrel Williams as the backing track as I think it’s an uplifting happy song to link to the video.

I enjoyed this assignment as id never really done anything in video before and I liked playing with the camera and getting different footage from around the college. I found my skills were very basic and could definitely be improved with practise! When editing I found that my sound levels on the interview were all over the place and very quiet, in my final video it’s hard to make out what the students are saying which is the biggest down fall of the final piece. I think I showed a range of shots in my video and good transitions from one to another but could have improved them with a steadier hand. I found the editing process quiet long but that was because I got a lot more footage then needed but only some of it was useable. I think overall it was a good first basic video for me and was edited quiet well together with music and writing at the beginning and end but next time I will focus on being more precise with my shots and angles and make sure I use the right sound equipment needed.

I also handed out feedback sheets to my class mates for them to fill out after watching my video, the questions were as follows:

Does the video show what is asked in the brief?

Are there enough aspects of the college shown?

What could be improved?

Do you think the music fits?

Any other comments?

From the feedback I got was that there was a good range of shots from around the college and the student interviews were a good idea and that it matched the brief given. They all found that the sound levels should have been better and that some shots could be improved by a steadier hand and more focus. They found that the music was a good fit and that the transitions between the shots were also good.

Throughout this I developed skills such as how to use a camera and how to take lots of different basic shots as well as learning to do the white balance before starting and recording. I learned how to capture the footage to transfer from the camera to my computer and how to use final cut to edit my final video together.

Legal and Ethical Considerations

Legal and Ethical Considerations

Copyright
The Copyright, designs and Patents Act 1988. Copyright gives anyone who has created anything the legal rights over that, whether it’s audio, images, books or any other form of media texts. For anyone to use this material without permission from the creator’s means they are committing a civil offence and can be taken to court and fined. You can get away with copyright law if it’s for things such as reviews or criticism, news reporting, academic research or through public domain where the rights disappear if the creator has been dead for 70 years onwards or if the creator themselves have put their media in the public domain which means it becomes free for public use.
The advantages are for copyright law is that if you create anything it can’t be stolen for someone else to use without your permission, for example if you write a script nobody could take that as there work or use it without your permission. Other advantages are that you could earn more money by charging people to use your script or whatever it may be.
The disadvantages are if you were to need something that you don’t have copyright to its may take time and your money to get the copyright and could be a lot of hassle depending on if the creator was even willing to let you use it.
For example in the hangover the character Stu gets a copy of Mike Tysons tattoo, and just before this come out the tattooist that created it for Tyson tried to sue Warner Bros for copyright.
Libel
Libel is defamation through written words or images. It is a civil offence designed to protect individuals and companies. This English law allows anyone to be taken to court if proven they have published any false statements or stories upon anybody or any company. In court any statement if straight away classed as false and deamination unless can be proved true with solid evidence. This can be made even harder if the person is big in the public eye as they can afford expensice lawyers so if you don’t have solid evidence whether you’re sure it’s true or not you might not want to publish it.
The advantages of this are that without evidence the media can’t get away with defamation over your name and can’t make up lies.
The disadvantages are if you know this is true put don’t have enough solid evidence to publish a story that could potentially bring you a lot of income.
An example of this is Tom Cruise is currently trying to sue an American magazine for defamation as they published an article in July claiming that Cruise had abandoned his 6 year old daughter Suri. His Lawyer published a statement on behalf of Cruise saying it was lies and hurtful. The case will be taken to court in the upcoming months.
Ethical Consideration
Legal Constraints
It is an offence to publicize racial and religious hatred this is known as the Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006. This is if anything is produced in the media via chat shows or call ins etc. If caught doing this you can be prosecuted as it is a defence. There is no balancing so on a chat show you couldn’t have an extremely anti racial person Vs a racist person as that is still committing the offence. Some of the exceptions or in films and TV shows where the character may be a racist person or against a certain religion and then would have to act out in that way.
The advantages are that this has stopped a lot of racial and religious abuse that used to be heavily publicized in the media. Disadvantages are that sometimes there is an extremely fine line that changes all the time depending on the situation so you have to be so careful when entering that grey area.
Representation
Media producers have to be more careful now than they ever had to be for stereotyping different groups. What producers could have gotten away with 20 years ago isn’t acceptable in our day and age.  For example kids that hang around on streets playing are regularly classed as trouble makers and people in the public automatically feel distressed around them this is due to press making a minority group bigger and tarnishing kids that could be doing nothing wrong. This is because media has ‘free speech’ which comes back to the ‘Should media producers be allowed to say what they want about a minority?’  Shows like ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ and ‘Geordie Shore’ give some people the wrong impression of the areas where these shows are shot which is an example of people stereotyping a lot of people for a tiny minority.
Privacy
There is no strict or specific laws to privacy in the UK but it is stated ‘’the right to respect for private and family life, home and correspondence.’’ In article 8 of the Human Rights Act 1998.
I believe ordinary people are entitled to their own privacy away from media if that is what they desire. I don’t think it’s any persons right to intrude into somebody’s private life if they have not been invited nor put themselves in that spotlight. I also believe that celebrities, politicians, sports stars etc have the right to privacy as well, whether or not they put themselves in the spot light everyone is entitled to a private lifestyle if not more so to these ‘celebrities’ who have given their privacy up for most of their lives down to their jobs/careers or upbringing if they want a holiday or when there in the comfort of their own home I don’t think they should be allowed to be photographed for the world to see.

An example of this is when the royals Kate and William were on their honeymoon she was photographed by paparazzi  topless when they were in a private location where no one could get to them. I think this was wrong and believe that even though they are very much public figure if they have not put themselves in a situation where they want to be seen by the world they deserve to have the privacy they are entitled to.
